Previous Setups

Previous Setups: (updated October 2, 2013)

Limitations with current setups:

  • All applications are installed on a single or a pair of boxes; most applications run better on different Linux distros, but are forced into one
  • Not able to test upgrades as easy
  • Very limited in backups / restores
  • Not able to test numerous operating systems
  • Laptop is tied to a small SAN via eSATA to test VMs and to support additional local storage
  • Using Fedora as it was the most compatible with what I current need, but it upgrades too quickly for me

  • ~2012 - 2013
I was able to use a dual core Dell laptop that somebody gave me (it had a broken screen that I used the monitor out feature). I had to migrate this as the previous older 2002 Dell laptop wasn't doing very well. I put Fedora ~15 on it and added a USB tuner and external SAN (SANS Digital) with 4 new 2.50 TB drives. I was able to use MythTV as a PVR, Samba for basic CIFS and Apache for basic web apps (didn't get to bring everything online that I had before). I also started using Plex Media server to stream movies to the Roku devices, phones, and laptops.

    • Main Server (Dell laptop someone gave me because it had a smashed screen)
      • Fedora 17, built sometime around 2012
      • dual core 2.2 GHz
      • 4 GB memory
      • Upgraded HDD to 60 GB SSD (~$70)
      • SANS Digital 4 - 2TB drives RAID 5 (~6.5 TB) via USB
        • Primarily for storage of home movies hosted by Plex
      • Running:
        • Plex Media Server
        • few LAMP applications like MediaWIKI, PHPGedView, PHPNuke
        • local DNS
    • VoIP Server (HP desktop that I found on Craigslist for free)
      • Intel Celeron 1 GHz
      • 384 MB memory
      • 30 GB IDE 2.5" SSD HDD (~$30)
      • Trixbox with 4 port PCI FXS card

    ~ 2005 - 2011
I was running quite a few applications on an older Athlon XP (somewhere around 1.2 GHz) between ~2005 and 2011 when the machine. I migrated it to an older Dell laptop I bought in 2002. I was using an older 550 MHz machine as my VoIP server (Asterisk@Home and then trixbox). I was also using an older 350 MHz machine with a Hauppauge TV Tuner card running MythTV as my PVR.

    • Dell Laptop originally purchased in ~2002
      • Purchased 30 GB IDE 2.5" SSD *moved to support future VoIP server
      • Ran basic services with SANS Digital 4 - 250 GB RAID 5 (~680 GB) *moved to laptop to support VM training
    • AthlonXP
      • Fedora 5 or 6
      • 4 older IDE HDDS (~60 GB, ~120 GB, ~120 GB, ~320 GB)

      • Dovecot for IMAP support
      • SquirrelMail for web based email support
      • Samba linked to LDAP server for CIFS support
        • Configured as a domain controller for Windows XP machines
      • SWAT linked to LDAP to support LDAP password changes
      • OpenFire for XMPP support
      • Zenoss for monitoring
      • Splunk for log analysis
      • Fedora Directory Server (pre-cursor to 389 Directory Server)

        • MediaWIKI for knowledge repository
